Scientists have revealed five lifestyle habits linked to having a longer life – that is also free from cancer.
A study published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) says different lifestyles can lengthen life expectancy.
Although luck can affect life length, it doesn’t mean a person’s choices can’t have an impact.
Research shows the decisions individuals make can determine their life expectancy and provide a buffer against chronic disease.
The BMJ study looked to identify the decisions which most commonly lead to a healthier life.
It found five lifestyle factors were associated with greater life expectancy:
These were never smoking, keeping a body mass index (BMI) of 18.5-24.9, doing moderate to vigorous physical activity, having moderate alcohol intake and maintaining a higher diet quality score..
Experts examined the link between lifestyle factors and life expectancy free of diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and cancer.
They found people who followed the five factors provided greater life expectancy, free from medical conditions
A life free of diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and cancer at age 50 was 23.7 years for women who adopted no low risk lifestyle factors.
This contrasted to women of 34.4 years who adopted four or five low risk factors.
At age 50, the life expectancy was 23.5 years among men who adopted no low risk lifestyle factors and 31.1 years in men who followed four or five low risk lifestyle factors.
The study found male smokers who smoked heavily, or obese men and women, recorded the lowest proportion of total life expectancy at age 50.
“Adherence to a healthy lifestyle at mid-life is associated with a longer life expectancy free of major chronic diseases,” concluded the study researchers.
Moderate activity is recommended raise the heart rate, make you breathe faster and feel warmer.
The NHS says one way to tell if you’re working at a moderately is if you can still talk, but not sing.
Examples of moderate activities included brisk walking, water aerobics, riding a bike, dancing, doubles tennis, pushing a lawn mower, hiking and roller blading.
Vigorous activity, meanwhile, makes you breathe hard and fast.
The NHS states: “If you’re working at this level, you will not be able to say more than a few words without pausing for breath”
“In general, 75 minutes of vigorous intensity activity can give similar health benefits to 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity.”
