How to Find Fashion Inspiration

Everyone has things that they like to wear, and things that they can’t ever imagine wearing. As we learn more about ourselves and our personal style, most of us go through periods of feeling a bit lost for direction. Have you ever gone through a stage where you realize you hate certain things in your closet? We all have!

Even if you know your personal style and have a good handle on what you love and hate about fashion, there may be times when you just feel a little under-inspired. In these moments, where do you turn for fashion inspiration? How do you get over a fashion slump?

How to Find Fashion Inspiration

Everyone finds inspiration in different things. For some people, their inspiration comes from nature, art, or current trends. For others, inspiration comes from trying new things and taking risks. When it comes to fashion, there is really no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ way to find inspiration. The key is finding what inspires you. Below, we discuss some of our favorite ways to find fashion inspiration:

Fashion Magazines

While it may seem obvious, not everyone has a collection of fashion magazine subscriptions in which to find inspiration. The good news is that they are readily available – in print and online. Fashion magazines are a great way to find inspiration by looking at what other people wear, thinking about what you like and don’t like, and making a sort of mood board based on the items you do like.

Current Events

One way to get inspired is to find clothing items that speak to you, what you stand for, and what you believe in. Black pride shirts are a great example. Maybe you want to show your support for your favorite Black-owned business, or maybe you want to let your ‘Black Girl Magic’ shine. In either case, statement shirts, hats, hoodies, and accessories are popular items to build your wardrobe with a touch of your personality and culture.

There are numerous fashion bloggers across the internet, which is great if you are looking for fashion inspiration. Find a few blogs that speak to your style or current lifestyle (motherhood, working mom, career woman, etc.). Browse these blogs and follow their feeds so you can see more about what fashion trends and styles may be a good fit for you.

Social Media

Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest are all excellent sources of information about fashion and what is trending. Often, people post to social media before they post to their website or blog. That means you can sometimes find information before it is widely available. Also, you can often find complete outfit ideas that real people (i.e. not celebrities) have put together, which is a great way to learn more about which brands and styles you like.

Go Shopping

Sometimes the best way to get fashion inspiration is to simply go shopping. The mall is a great place to do this because you get to see what is available at different retailers. Of course, you can also window shop online, but you don’t get the opportunity to see the items in person or feel the material. Getting out and seeing clothing, outfits, and people can be very inspiring. If you want to make a purchase – do so! If not, window shopping is great too. If you see something you love, don’t be afraid to take a risk and try it on. You never know when fashion may surprise you.

The ideas above are our favorite ways to find fashion inspiration. Find what works best for you by trying different ideas. Once you find what works, you will know how to easily get your fashion game back on track.
